Welcome to our guide

Through out the years we've fostered many pets and have always been asked our secret to maintaining a clean space despite all the furry residents. So we decided to gather all our tips, tricks, and favorite products in one place to share with our fellow pet lovers.

Our goal is to help you enjoy the companionship of your pets without stressing about the mess. So, let's dive in and make your home both pet-friendly and sparkling clean!

We love our furry companions to the moon and back, but let's be honest - their shedding can drive us bonkers.

It's like pet hair has superpowers, infiltrating every nook and cranny of our lives.

We're constantly in battle mode, armed with vacuums, brushes, and lint rollers, yet the hair keeps coming back for more.

But fear not, because we've got you covered!

To effectively win the battle against pet hair, it's crucial we approach the problem from various angles, using a combination of strategies and tools designed to target pet hair both on your pet and in your environment.

Let's start with the source...

Your Fur Baby

A healthy pet coat is the result of a well-balanced diet that includes high-quality protein, Omega-3, and Omega-6 fatty acids.

If these essential nutrients are missing or insufficient in your pet's diet, it can lead to a dull, lackluster coat and increased shedding.

Providing your pet with the right balance of these key nutrients is crucial for maintaining a healthy, shiny coat and minimizing shedding.

According to the National Research Council (NRC), the ideal ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids for dogs and cats should range between 2.6:1 and 26:1, while the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) suggests a maximum ratio of 30:1.

Commercial pet foods often have higher levels of omega-6 and lower levels of omega-3, leading to an imbalanced ratio. Homemade or raw diets can also suffer from an unbalanced ratio, particularly if they lack variety. To achieve a balanced ratio, consider adding omega-3 rich supplements to your pets diet.

One popular choice we recommend to help you achieve this is BARK&SPARK Omega 3 Treats for Dogs and Cats. You can find this available on Amazon. I do want to mention that as an Amazon Associate I do earn from qualifying purchases.

Now let's talk about the importance of brushing.

How often you should brush your pet's coat not only depends on their shedding habits but also on their coat length. Pets with medium to long coats, especially those that shed heavily, should ideally be brushed daily. To minimize loose fur in your home, these grooming sessions should take place outdoors.

Using the right brush for your pet's coat type is crucial, as it ensures effective removal of loose fur, stimulates the skin, and helps spread healthy oils throughout the coat, leading to a healthier and shinier appearance overall. Below we have listed some of the most popular choices for pet brushes.

We've tried many of the popular brands and we've narrowed it down to our favorites based on effectiveness while keeping coat lengths in mind.

Let's start with short coats

Now the following brush is advertised for all coat lengths. However, we find that it's highly effective on shorter coats. The KONG ZoomGroom is by far our favorite brush for our short coated fur babies. It can be used wet or dry. They have options for both Dogs and Cats.

This next recommendation is a bit pricier but what a game changer!

The AIRROBO Dog Grooming Vacuum collects pet hair as you brush or groom. We were quite surprised by it's performance. It's also surprisingly quiet and shouldn't stress you fur baby.

Bathing

Regular baths can help eliminate loose fur and reduce shedding in your pet. However, the frequency of baths should be based on your pet's coat type, lifestyle, and health status, and any changes to their routine should be discussed with a veterinarian.

Although giving your pet a few additional baths during shedding season can be beneficial in managing the amount of loose fur, you should avoid over-bathing as it can remove the natural oils from their skin, causing it to become dry and irritated.

We like to use TropiClean Lime & Coconut Deshedding Dog Shampoo in combination with our KONG ZoomGroom can be a highly effective combination to use with dogs.

Pro Tip: For those extra stubborn pet hairs clinging to your sheets, blankets, and clothing, try this pre-wash trick. Run them through the dryer on a no-heat setting for about 10 minutes.

Don't forget to toss in a couple of dryer sheets, bounce makes one specifically formulated for pet hair. It really helps reduce static. This simple step will help loosen the hairs, making your washing process more effective.

Once you've washed your fabrics, try using Handy Laundry wool balls for the final dryer session. We'll list the ones we use below.
